First, check your computer for the following: RAM and HD space. If you have LESS than 40 Gigabytes of free space on your HD, DO NOT UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 7! Same applies if you have less than 2 Gigabytes of RAM.

The reasons are simple - Windows 7 installs to take up between 15 - 20 Gb of HD space and in the install process needs a great deal of RAM to properly install on a Pentium computer (or newer). Note: I have recently done installs using 1 Gb RAM, but it takes longer and tends to pause for long periods during the installation program.

Finally, just as an FYI, make sure before you perform an install of this nature that you have done a complete error check of your HD (surface scan) to mark bad tracks or sectors. Otherwise, your install may appear to work, but your computer will not function.
