if I'm understanding your question, it's only files you want to transfer, you just state that the xp crapped out so I'll assume the hard drive is still okay,, if that's the case grab one these http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2477926&Sku=V13-1113 just go to the us site though.
once you have that adapter in your hands, pop the drive out of the XP system and hook it up, it will come up as a drive in windows 7 then just navigate to the files you want and transfer them over..

I'm using windows 7 right now and have hard drives out of my old xp and also from my vista ,,, I had no problem getting my files.. once I had the files from the xp I just reformatted it so I could use it for storage, my vista is still in tack for now.

If the hard drive is cooked then of course it's not going to work..

Edit: should have read down and I would have seen you already got it.. Either way,, if you play with computers that adapter is great,, I'm always coming across old drives, I just plug em in and if they work keep them for backups or extra storage..
